Oursong is the worship team for Ourspace. It is made up of students and adult leaders who seek to lead others to Christ through song. Worship comprises everything we do to bring Glory to God. It is a ceaseless endeavor to lay at God’s feet the worth He is do. Worship is Worth-Ship. Worship is done through prayer, teaching, fellowship, community, offering, reading of scripture, song and more. Ourspace seeks to worship God in everything we do weather we are eating or drinking. We believe we must worship in both spirit and truth. To worship with one or the other is not to worship at all.
Christ sets for this idea of worship in John 4 when he tells the woman at the well that, “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks”. Christ is moving the location of worship not to a physical mountain but a spiritual mountain of our hearts. This worship is not directed by ceremony but by truth.
We are to worship with our spirit. That is to worship God with all our “heart”, “soul”, “mind” and “strength” (Deuteronomy 6, Mark 12, Luke 10). True worship must engage our whole heart. God has created each individual with different external patterns of passion. However God has wired us, our worship should maximize those patterns of passion for Him. We must worship in spirit.
We are to worship from the truth. That is to worship God with all of our growing knowledge of Him (2 Peter 3). True worship comes from understanding what God has, is and will do in your life. The more you understand God’s attributes, abilities, and actions the more you cannot but help to worship Him. God has wired us to worship. We must worship Him.
True worship cannot have one aspect without the other. You must worship in both spirit and truth. If one chases worshiping in spirit without truth it will end in a constant pursuit of an emotional high battling a shallow interaction with God. If one chases worshiping in truth without spirit it will lead to a constant lifestyle of legalism battling a transactional interaction with God. But when one worships in spirit and truth one worships from the foundation of knowing what God has done and therefore cannot help but respond with all of their spirit. The more we understand God the more we love Him. The more we love Him the more we worship. The more we worship the more He is glorified. Our music is not intended to create emotional responses, our emotional response through music comes from understanding truth.
